Organizations
Listed below are several organizations that are
specifically focused on providing services or support and information to
individuals with disabilities who are parents.
- The Center for Rights of Parents with Disabilities. The Center for the Rights of Parents with Disabilities ("CRPD") is a program of the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition that is designed to combat discrimination that impacts parenting for parents with disabilities, through direct services, education, research and training. The CRPD provides legal representation to parents in Colorado, and can provide technical assistance to attorneys, service providers and parents in other states.
- The DisAbled
Women's Network (DAWN). This organization in Ontario, Canada serves the
needs of women with disabilities. Women's health and parenting are two of its
primary concerns.
- Through the
Looking Glass A community nonprofit organization in Berkely, CA (where
else) that emerged from the independent living movement in 1982. Their
Adaptive Parenting Equipment Idea Book One has examples of many
different types of equipment for parents with disabilities, including cribs,
baby carriers, changing tables, high chairs, etc. These are not commercial
products, but examples of solutions devised for particular problems. You'll
need to work with your own therapists, rehab engineers, etc. to construct the
actual devices. They also have many other resources and a newsletter. The Idea

- Parenting with a Disability Network (PDN) -- The
Parenting with a Disability Network is a peer support and information-sharing
network for parents and prospective parents with a disability. The aim of the
PDN is to help families develop unique solutions to parenting challenges by
providing opportunities for education, information-sharing, networking and peer
support. The PDN offers:
* Peer support opportunities (family social
activities, peer matching) * One-to-one support * Resources on parenting
with a disability (books, articles, videos) * Information about community
services and resources * Workshops and seminars * Research and
development of new models of support for parents with a disability
